The numbers does look astounding but given the fact
that the craze to get to the US increases exponentially
every passing year, its not really unthinkable/unimaginable.
The quota to catch the H1B bus starts April 1st every year.
(ah, what a date!!)
When i applied couple of yrs back, the quota of 57000
visas (and not 65000 as there is some 8000 visas set aside for
some singapore-chile agreement or something such)
got over in Aug. Last year, it got over in May and voila this year,
it lasted just for the D-day !!!
So, whats in store for next year?
57000 visas for a year is literally peanuts. This number
is not even enough for South TamilNadu leave alone the
Rajugaarus,Patel brothers and the like !!
Quite frankly H1B sucks. It really does. Its the most
torturous struggle i have ever had in my life !!!
The struggle to get school 1st in 12th, join good college
and subsequently spend 5 yrs in an MNC is nothing compared
to this.

remove the bond from the offer letter, finally accept a 1yr bond,

homepage, go thru all the speculations in the world around h1, atlast
from mid-march follow up hard with him to file H1 on time etc...
and yeah,all this without the knowledge of ur current
"eyes-la-velakkennai-vittu-paakura" manager. u name it !!)
its such a PITA !!

Now,if you define something called "final receipt date" , what is the logic
behind including the petitions from the following day? I am at an
absolute loss trying to think what sense does it make esp given the
fact that on the very first day, there has been a whopping 1,50,000 visa
application. This makes those who applied on Apr 2nd lose it over someone
who applied on 3rd based on pure luck !!
Literally, no one can sleep well until they get their petition number which
happens to be several weeks from now :(
Getting H1 is now just like winning a lottery.
The worst thing is that this affects a lot of really talented smart ppl
who want to work in the US. I know of a lot of my friends and juniors
who got placed in top notch MNCs (MS/Oracle/Intel/Yahoo etc) and
worked there for 3 to 5 yrs. Inspite of good academics and MNC experience,
they are forced to either gamble with a body-shopper (and go thru
the pain points listed above) or join a service company hoping that they
will take the pain !!!
Its high time USCIS either increases the numbers or still better
come out with a good system to accept talented immigrants.
P.S : Just an outburst after reading the news. Those who could relate,

For the first time indha varusham dhaan me too watched this news just bcoz of my friend.
She is recently married and her husband is in US. Now she had gone to US in dependent visa. She wants to work and they both decided that they will stay there if they get H1 for her. Unluckily she dint get in this quota. Now they are completely upset and planning to come back rejecting the guys onsite offer. :-( Last november she quitted the job here and got married. She doesnt want to take a break for more than a yr. so they plan to be back to india before november. eppadi poga pogudhunnu therila

Very true... Even I was shocked after I checked out the news about the procedure to be followed. But frankly, the number applications don't surprise me, considering the way government is playing around with the educational institutions and even private employers.

That is not true. When I came here in 2003, the quota was 115K. I got H1 in September.. From 2004, the cap was reduced to 65K (including Singapore-Chile). So, everyone who couldn't get their visa from 2004 onwards keep applying the next year. That's the reason for increasing # of applications. Another reason is big Indian companies like wipro, Infy, TCS. They apply in bulks, even if they don't send the candidates onsite that year.

Arun, this is to give room for postal delays and such. No one would plan to apply on Apr 3rd. As far as I know, everyone planned for their appln. to reach on Sat (Mar 31), which is the earliest date they accept applications.

They'll probably do. There is a bill which will probably be passed this year.
The pathetic thing is, those who paid for their H1B to body shoppers may or may not get their money back. Even though USCIS returns the fee if they don't take the application, the body shoppers will rip you off saying attorney fee and blah blah..

The cocept of "bond" doesn't work in the US Arun. Here, u can leave "at will" and no bond can legally stop you.

More than H1B, green card really sucks.. The processing time is horrible these days. Especially affects girls who get married and come here on H4. They can't work until they get their EAD/green card. Otherwise, they need to transfer to H1, which again has uncertainities now a days..
US IMMIGRATION TOTALLY SUCKS. Yet, our people are patient enough to go thru' all these to work and live here.

moreover bodyshoppers used to just spend 500 bucks to apply h1 previously.. so there was no bond and no initial deposit etc
